Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270), İsmet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Askeriye yorgancisi". At about 16, in 1870/71, İsmet began work in Çankırı, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with İsmet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kastamonu. İsmet then moved to İnebolu in 1873/74, then back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1874 to 1892. The last post was in Cebeli garibi in 1892/93, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 1,250 in 1892/93, as 2. Müdür in Cebeli garibi, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1892/93, the list of 1893/94 (AH 1311) gives the status word Vefat (death).
