Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Feyzullah Zihni Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Feyzullah Zihni also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Feyzullah Zihni began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Haskovo (Hasköy) in 1871/72, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1874/75, with Feyzullah Zihni as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Nova Zagora (Yeni Zağra). Feyzullah Zihni then moved to Haskovo, Çorlu and Hudavendigar from 1875 to 1878. The last posts were in Edirne from 1878 to 1881.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to 400 in 1875/76, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Haskovo, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 37,200 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1880/81.
