Life#
Abdülbaki Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülbaki also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Baghdad in 1873/74, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Abdülbaki in Baghdad, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1879/80. Abdülbaki then moved to Khanaqin (Hanikin) and Hillah (Hille) from 1880 to 1883, then Al-Shatrah (Şatra) from 1883 to 1889, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). Next came Karbala (Kerbela) from 1889 to 1892. From 1892 to 1905 every annual entry places Abdülbaki again in Baghdad, first as a central office official (Merkez Memuru), from 1904/05 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 1,000 in 1904/05, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Baghdad, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 30 years the salaries add up to 239,880 kuruş, 1.3 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
