Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Ali Bey was the child of a colonel (miralay). Mehmet Ali had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Aleppo (Halep) in 1865/66, at about 13, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 450 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Mehmet Ali in Aleppo as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Ali to eight places in 16 years, from Kilis to Antakya, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1886/87. The last posts were in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) from 1889 to 1898. Ten places in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 450 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 1,500 in 1886/87, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Mocha, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 600 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1897/98.
