Life#
Born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1849/50 (AH 1266), Hasan Tahsin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hasan Tahsin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Edremit in 1867/68, at about 17, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with Hasan Tahsin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo (Halep). Next came six places in 13 years, from Sofia (Sofya) to Salihli, with a rise to central office official (Merkez Memuru) in 1878/79. From 1886 to 1889 the annual entries place Hasan Tahsin in Denizli.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 750 in 1878/79, as Merkez Memuru in Veliko Tarnovo, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1888/89.
