Life#
Born in İzmit in 1850/51 (AH 1267), İbrahim Vehbi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. İbrahim Vehbi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in İzmit in 1865/66, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with İbrahim Vehbi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beypazarı. Next came Geyve, Bilecik, Bursa and Mudanya, four places in eight years, then Hudavendigar from 1876 to 1889. In 1889/90 the lists place İbrahim Vehbi in Konya, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 480 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to 1,000 in 1889/90, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Konya, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 24 years the salaries add up to 177,120 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1889/90.
