Life#
Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Veria (Karaferye) in 1828/29 (AH 1244) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "ziraat muduru". At about 28, in 1856/57, Hasan Tahsin began work in Veria. The annual lists begin in 1864/65, with Hasan Tahsin as Nayib in Tuna, where the entries run to 1875/76. Hasan Tahsin then moved to Hudavendigar and Edirne from 1876 to 1879, with a rise to Istinaf Mahkemesi Riyaseti in 1878/79. From 1879 to 1891 every annual entry places Hasan Tahsin in Istanbul, first as Istinaf Mahkemesi Riyaseti, from 1880/81 as Encumeni Adliye Riyaseti, from 1886/87 as Temyiz Mahkemesi Azasi and from 1890/91 as Kadi.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 6,000 kuruş a month in 1864/65, as Nayib in Tuna, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 28 years pay ended below where it began, 5,900 kuruş against 6,000; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 0.5 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by 4 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The list of 1891/92 (AH 1309) gives the status word Vefat (death). Hasan Tahsin received the Mecidi order.
