Life#
Born in Lom in 1827/28 (AH 1243), Haci Hafiz İsmail Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in the Nufus Kalemi in Lom in 1845, at about 17, on a first salary of 60 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1846/47, with İsmail in the custody of the cash chest (Sandık Emaneti) in Lom, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1867/68. Next came four places in 13 years, with a rise to Sancak Muhasabe Refiki in 1868/69 and to Liva Muhasebecisi in 1869/70, then Diyarbakır from 1880 to 1885. İsmail then moved to Aydın from 1886 to 1891. The last entry, for 1891/92, names neither a title nor a place. Few careers in the lists are as long; 32 of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 47 years or more.
Pay rose from 60 kuruş a month in 1846/47 to a peak of 3,500 in 1869/70, as Liva Muhasebecisi in Vidin, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less.
