Life#
Mehmet Yahya Efendi was born in Lom in 1871/72 (AH 1288), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1885/86, Mehmet Yahya began work in Jenin (Cenin), paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mehmet Yahya in Jenin as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru), where the entries run to 1891/92. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Yahya to Acre in 1892/93, then Tiberias (Taberiye) from 1893 to 1909. The last post was in Jaffa (Yafa) in 1909/10.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 400 in 1909/10, the peak, as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Jaffa, when one in three paid officials earned less.
