What the school was

The idadi, the upper secondary school above the rüşdiye, meant to prepare pupils for the higher civil schools. The first civil idadi classes opened in Istanbul in 1874; at the end of the reign of Abdülhamid II there were 109 idadis, 9 of them in Istanbul, with nearly 20,000 pupils.
