Life#
Born in Damascus (Şam) in 1881/82 (AH 1299), MEHMET EFENDİ came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "tufekci". Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); MEHMET also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Damascus in 1897/98, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1902/03 to 1906/07 places MEHMET in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Damascus, the birthplace.
