Life#
Mehmet Muhyiddin Efendi was born in Rashaya (Raşeya) in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took four years, at the Cizvit Mektebi; Mehmet Muhyiddin also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, no other studied at Cizvit Mektebi.
Mehmet Muhyiddin began work in Latakia (Lazkiye) in 1899/1900, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with Mehmet Muhyiddin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Damascus (Şam), where the entries run to 1904/05. The last post was in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1905/06.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Damascus, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less.
