Life

Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Mahmut Nedim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mahmut Nedim also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 19, in 1899/1900, Mahmut Nedim began work in Beirut, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with Mahmut Nedim as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Damascus (Şam). The last post was in Beirut, the birthplace, in 1904/05.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Damascus, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
