Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Seyit Memduh Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Memduh also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
At about 13, in 1892/93, Memduh began work in Beirut, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Memduh as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya), where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Bursa from 1900 to 1904 and Bermane in 1904/05, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 500 in 1903/04, as Posta Memuru in Bursa, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
