Life#
Kâmil Efendi was born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a gendarme (jandarma). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Kâmil also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 22, in 1904/05, Kâmil began work in Beirut, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. From 1904/05 to 1908/09 every annual entry places Kâmil in Beirut, the birthplace, first as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru), from 1907/08 as a deliverer (Müvezzi) and from 1908/09 as a postal official (Posta Memuru).
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 260 in 1908/09, as Posta Memuru in Beirut, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 10,920 kuruş, 44 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
