Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Tevfik Şahin Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Tevfik Şahin was taught by a private teacher, and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
At about 19, in 1904/05, Tevfik Şahin began work in Beirut, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1904/05 to 1906/07 places Tevfik Şahin in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beirut, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less.
