Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, this official was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Istanbul in 1885/86, at about 18, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1888/89. Next came Jeddah (Cidde), Bandırma, İskenderun and Jerusalem (Kudüs), four places in 14 years, then Beirut (Beyrut) from 1903 to 1908, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür). The last posts were in Adana from 1908 to 1910 and Istanbul again in 1910/11, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1908/09. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. The farthest post, Jeddah, lay about 2,350 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 1,500 in 1908/09, as Müfettiş in Adana, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
