Life#
Mustafa İsmet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 12, in 1875/76, Mustafa İsmet began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 12 or younger. Every annual entry from 1875/76 to 1911 places Mustafa İsmet in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the goods and stores office (Eşya Kalemi), from 1895/96 as an assistant director (Müdür Muavini), from 1909/10 as Ambar Baskitabeti and from 1911 as Depo Mudur.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 2,000 in 1911, as Depo Mudur in Istanbul, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 38 years the salaries add up to 368,520 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. The peak was 20 times the first salary, a rise matched by fewer than 5 per cent of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more. The final annual entry is for 1911.
