Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Mustafa Aziz Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Harir dolapcisi". Mustafa Aziz had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1875/76 to 1904/05 every annual entry places Mustafa Aziz in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1880/81 in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti), from 1884/85 as Pul Mukayyiti and from 1892/93 as Pul Baskitabeti. A career like this is rare; 11 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 880 in 1903/04, as Pul Baskitabeti in Istanbul, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less.
