Life#
Born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Ahmet Faik Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Dergahi Ali Kapicibasi". Work began in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Plovdiv in 1875/76, at about 16, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Ahmet Faik in Plovdiv, the birthplace, as a postal official (Posta Memuru). Ahmet Faik then moved to Edirne from 1886 to 1894, with a rise to Rusumat Baskitabeti in 1887/88 and to Belediye Riyaseti in 1891/92, then İpsala in 1894/95 and Katerini in 1895/96. Next came Blagoevgrad (Yukarı Cuma) from 1896 to 1903. The last posts were in Strumica (Ustrumca) from 1903 to 1905.
The salary went from 600 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 2,000 in 1892/93, the peak, as Belediye Riyaseti in Edirne, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. On average the pay stood in the top 10.2 per cent of each year's paid officials; fewer than 2 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more stood as high. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
