Life#
İbrahim Ethem Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1889/90, İbrahim Ethem began work in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places İbrahim Ethem in Gebze as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Razlog (Razlık), Blagoevgrad (Yukarı Cuma) and Edirne from 1896 to 1900. For 1900 to 1902 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Bursa in 1902/03.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Gebze, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
