Life

Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Sivas in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Tokat in 1888/89, at about 16, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Ali Rıza in Sivas, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98. The last posts were in Tokat and Aleppo (Halep) from 1898 to 1905 and Koyulhisar in 1905/06, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1904/05. The lists give Aciga Cikarildi for 1902/03 instead of a title.

The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 500 in 1904/05, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Aleppo, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
