Life

Born in Sivas in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Ethem Efendi was the child of a mounted courier (tatar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Work began in Sivas in 1893/94, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places İbrahim Ethem in Sivas, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Çanakkale from 1896 to 1902. In 1903/04 the lists place İbrahim Ethem in Çatalağzı.

Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 400 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Çatalağzı, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 25,800 kuruş, 54 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
