Life#
Born in İzmit in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Rıza began work in Adapazarı in 1873/74, at about 13, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for ten years or longer. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places Ali Rıza in Çorlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1888/89. Next came Geyve, Kandıra, Karamürsel, Çanakkale and Ioannina (Yanya), five places in 15 years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1898/99 and to director (Müdür) in 1902/03. The last post was in Bilecik in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 1,250 in 1902/03, as Müdür in Ioannina, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 174,480 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
