Life#
Born in İzmit in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Mehmet Rami Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). At about 17, in 1883/84, Mehmet Rami began work in İzmit, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Mehmet Rami as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Çorlu. Mehmet Rami then moved back to İzmit, the birthplace, from 1887 to 1891, then Gebze, Aleppo (Halep) and Hereke from 1891 to 1897, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1891/92 and to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1895/96. The last posts were in Jeddah (Cidde) from 1898 to 1905, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1900/01 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi). Jeddah, about 2,300 km from İzmit, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 1,000 in 1895/96, as Posta Memuru in Aleppo, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
