Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a muezzin. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Osman Nuri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Bika in 1897/98, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 700 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Osman Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Jeddah (Cidde), where the entries run to 1903/04. The last post was in Erenköy in 1905/06. The farthest post, Jeddah, lay about 2,350 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 700 kuruş a month in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Jeddah, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
