Life#
Born in Gjirokastër (Ergiri) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of an army major (binbaşı). Hüseyin Hüsnü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1901/02, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Bitola (Manastır), with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1901/02 to 1904/05 places Hüseyin Hüsnü in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Thessaloniki (Selanik).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 285 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Thessaloniki, when one in five paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 12,660 kuruş, 54 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
