Life

Born in Gjirokastër (Ergiri) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Vlorë (Avlonya) in 1898/99, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Ali Rıza in Berat as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Elbasan (İlbasan) in 1905/06.

Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 290 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Elbasan, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 9,480 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
