Life#
Kâzım Efendi was born in Gjirokastër (Ergiri) in 1883/84 (AH 1301), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Kâzım also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Kâzım began work in Gjirokastër in 1899/1900, at about 16, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1908/09, places Kâzım in Tepelenë (Tepedelen) as Muvakkat Memuru. The last posts were in Ioannina (Yanya) from 1909 to 1911 and Gjirokastër, the birthplace, in 1911.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1908/09 to 400 in 1911, the peak, as Muvakkat Memuru in Gjirokastër, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1911.
