Life#
İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1889/90 (AH 1307) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at the Hamidi Rusdiyesi.
Work began in Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) in 1903/04, at about 14, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1908/09, places İsmail Hakkı in Korçë (Görice) as Muvakkat Memuru, where the entries run to 1911. In 1911/12 the lists place İsmail Hakkı in Thessaloniki (Selanik), with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1908/09 to 500 in 1911/12, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 24,000 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1911/12.
