Life#
Ömer Nail Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Kantar Pulcusu". Schooling took seven years, at the Hamidi Rusdiyesi.
At about 19, in 1899/1900, Ömer Nail began work in Beyoğlu, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1899/1900, places Ömer Nail in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1904/05. The last post was in Al-Faw (Fav) in 1905/06. The farthest post, Al-Faw, lay about 2,100 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
