Life#
Mehmet Veysi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Veysi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 21, in 1895/96, Mehmet Veysi began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Mehmet Veysi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1903 to 1905.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 140 in 1904/05, in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi) in Istanbul, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less.
