Life#
Born in Damascus (Şam) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdullah Halit Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdullah Halit also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Damascus in 1888/89, at about 15, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Abdullah Halit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Konya. Abdullah Halit then moved to Ioannina (Yanya), Yemen and Sana'a (Sana) from 1896 to 1902. The last post was in Izmir (İzmir) in 1902/03. Yemen, about 2,150 km from Damascus, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 1,000 in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Yemen, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
