Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Abdullah Kemal Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdullah Kemal also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 14, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1888/89, to 1892/93, every annual entry places Abdullah Kemal in the same office, Muhendis Kalemi, in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 75 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 100 in 1889/90, in the Muhendis Kalemi in Istanbul, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less.
