Life#
Mehmet Ekrem Bey was born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1888/89, Mehmet Ekrem began work in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mehmet Ekrem in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), where the entries run to 1893/94. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Ekrem to Galata and Haskovo (Hasköy) from 1894 to 1898, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1897/98, then back to Galata from 1898 to 1901. The last post was in Istanbul again in 1901/02.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 400 in 1897/98, as Posta Memuru in Haskovo, when one in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
