Life#
Yusuf Agah Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Yusuf Agah also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) in 1885/86, at about 11, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 11 or younger. Every annual entry from 1888/89 to 1906/07 places Yusuf Agah in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1894/95 in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 520 in 1905/06, in the Sevk Kalemi in Istanbul, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
