Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Ahmet Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Ahmet Hamdi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1888/89 to 1905/06 places Ahmet Hamdi in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi), from 1899/1900 in the Maas Kitabeti, from 1900/01 as Muhasebe Basmemuru and from 1901/02 as Kontrol Kalemi Basmemuru.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 1,100 in 1903/04, as Kontrol Kalemi Basmemuru in Istanbul, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
