Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Nazif Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mustafa Nazif had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 15, in 1890/91, Mustafa Nazif began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Mustafa Nazif in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1904/05. The last post was in Cezairi bahri sefid in 1905/06, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 1,200 in 1905/06, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Cezairi bahri sefid, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. Pay rose to 24 times the first salary; fewer than 4 per cent of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
