Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286), Mehmed Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Rusumat Naziri". Mehmed Tevfik had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1882/83, at about 14, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1887/88, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Mehmed Tevfik in the same office, documents office (Evrak Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace. Only 41 of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title in one place throughout.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 525 in 1903/04, the peak, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 83,100 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
