Life#
İsmail Ferit Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Emlak Muduru". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1885/86, İsmail Ferit began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with İsmail Ferit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1890/91. Next came Edirne, Keşan, Adana and Kavala, four places in five years. The last posts were in Bilecik from 1896 to 1903. In place of a title the lists give Isten El Cektirildi for 1903/04.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 400 in 1891/92, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 15 years of salary come to 62,400 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
