Life#
Born in Serres (Siroz) in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmed Tevfik Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Serres in 1882/83, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Ahmed Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Serres, the birthplace. Next came Drama in 1886/87. From 1887 to 1900 every annual entry places Ahmed Tevfik again in Serres, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1898/99 as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 594 in 1898/99, as 3. Müdür in Serres, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
