Life#
Born in Debrei bala in 1868/69 (AH 1285), Hasan Tahsin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1882/83, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Hasan Tahsin in Thessaloniki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1887/88. The annual lists then follow Hasan Tahsin to four places in seven years, then back to Sahovic from 1895 to 1897, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). Next came Ferizaj (Firzovik), Yemen and Sevkul hamis from 1897 to 1906, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in 1898/99. The last post was in Makbene in 1906/07. The farthest post, Sevkul hamis, lay about 3,700 km from Debrei bala, and 7 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 1,000 in 1898/99, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Yemen, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
