Life#
Hasan Şevket Efendi was born in Vidin in 1868/69 (AH 1285), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Ajloun (Aclun) in 1883/84, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Hasan Şevket in Skopje (Üsküp) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Hasan Şevket then moved to Serres (Siroz), Rhodes (Rodos), Malko Tarnovo (Tırnovacık), Sandıklı and Dinar, five places in seven years, then Bozcaada from 1895 to 1901. The last posts were in Yemen from 1901 to 1904 and Istanbul in 1904/05, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1901/02. The farthest post, Yemen, lay about 3,750 km from Vidin, and 4 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 1,500 in 1904/05, the peak, as Müfettiş Muavini in Istanbul, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1904/05, the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
