Life#
Halil Efendi was born in Vidin in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Halil also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 14, in 1887/88, Halil began work in Malkara, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Halil in Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Evreşe from 1893 to 1897. The farthest post, Al Hudaydah, lay about 3,750 km from Vidin, and 5 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 750 kuruş a month in 1891/92, as Muhabere Memuru in Al Hudaydah, when three in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
