Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hafız Bekir Sıdkı Efendi was the child of a postal official (posta memuru). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Bekir Sıdkı began work in Izmir in 1871/72, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Bekir Sıdkı in Izmir, the birthplace, as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1876/77. The annual lists then follow Bekir Sıdkı to Aydın from 1877 to 1898, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) and to chief official (Başmemur) in 1892/93, then back to Izmir from 1898 to 1902. The last posts were in Aydın again from 1902 to 1907.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 1,150 in 1892/93, the peak, as Başmemur in Aydın, when nine in ten paid officials earned less.
