Life#
Mehmet İzzet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1843/44 (AH 1259) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet İzzet also attended the telegraph school.
At about 17, in 1860/61, Mehmet İzzet began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1863/64, places Mehmet İzzet in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1866/67. Mehmet İzzet then moved to Mabeyni humayun from 1867 to 1872, then Tekirdağ from 1872 to 1882, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Next came Aydın from 1882 to 1895, with a rise to assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini). The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1895 to 1897.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to 1,200 in 1882/83, the peak, as Müfettiş Muavini in Aydın, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 35 years the salaries add up to 349,680 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
