Life#
Mustafa Cudi Efendi was born in Harput in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mustafa Cudi also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Damascus (Şam) in 1866/67, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Mustafa Cudi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Damascus, where the entries run to 1878/79. Mustafa Cudi then moved to Havran and Havra from 1879 to 1883, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1879/80. From 1883 to 1903 every annual entry places Mustafa Cudi in Suriye, with a rise to assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 1,200 in 1883/84, the peak, as Müfettiş Muavini in Suriye, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 34 years of salary come to 385,680 kuruş, 1.8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1902/03. Mustafa Cudi probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahvâl defterlerine göre Harputlu devlet adamları" by ENES MUTLUAY (2018) (the name and the birthplace agree).
