Life#
Born in Burdur in 1841/42 (AH 1257), Mehmet Nafiz Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a mufti (müftü). At about 26, in 1867/68, Mehmet Nafiz began work in the Mahkeme Kalemi in Istanbul. The annual lists begin in 1878, with Mehmet Nafiz in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi) in Kozan, where the entries run to 1880/81. Next came Cebeli bereket from 1881 to 1883, then Basra from 1883 to 1892. The last posts were in Suriye from 1893 to 1899, with a rise to DH Muduru.
The salary went from 950 kuruş a month in 1878 to 2,500 in 1893/94, the peak, as DH Muduru in Suriye, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 10.4 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1898/99. Mehmet Nafiz received a rank (rütbe) and the Mecidi order. An entry in "Sultan II. Abdülhamid döneminde Sicill-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Burdurlu kamu ..." by ELİF YASEMİN YILMAZ (2021) probably refers to Mehmet Nafiz, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
