Life#
Tavik Besim Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1845 (AH 1261) into the Jewish (Musevi) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi).
At about 22, in 1867/68, Tavik Besim began work in Baghdad, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Tavik Besim as Sef in Samawah (Semave), where the entries run to 1871/72. Next came Al-Faw (Fav), Basra, Khanaqin (Hanikin) and Nasriye, four places in 12 years, with a rise to chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru) in 1872/73 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1878/79. The last posts were in Basra again from 1883 to 1887.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 1,500 kuruş a month in 1869/70, as Sef in Samawah, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 19 years pay ended below where it began, 1,200 kuruş against 1,500; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1886/87.
