Life#
Yorgi Vasilyadi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Yorgi Vasilyadi also attended the telegraph school. Yorgi Vasilyadi knew four languages, English, French, Italian and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 19, in 1865/66, Yorgi Vasilyadi began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with Yorgi Vasilyadi as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Bosna, where the entries run to 1869/70. Next came five places in eight years, then a return to Jaffa from 1878 to 1880. Yorgi Vasilyadi then moved to Kuşadası in 1880/81, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). From 1881 to 1897 the annual entries place Yorgi Vasilyadi in Samsun, with a rise to chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru). Six provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 480 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to a peak of 800 in 1870/71, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Gradiška, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
